Feb. 7 - 4.5 Miles Ran, Sponsor's Dozing

I got out of work after meetings `til 4pm, and raced home to get a 4.5 mile run in.  I started the run at about 5:10pm, and it was still fairly light out--very encouraging for the running schedule.  With Winter Storm Nemo blowing in, the next two days could be very interesting.  I may have to get out early tomorrow to have any chance, and Saturday looks like a white out.  Might make for a great photo op though!

I ran the Day Pond loop with two extra laps around the pond to increase the mileage.  Felt very strong, in fact, I've felt great all week (knock on wood).  Today's miles were sponsored by Eric Hopkins (134), Tom Jones (135-136) and Lori Kessler (137).  Thanks Eric, Tom and Lori for supporting the cause.  Time to look for the snow shoes!

Feb. 6 - 3.2 Miles Ran, 6 Miles Sponsored

Another nice day for a run, though I waited a few hours too many.  A little after noon it seemed like the temperature was in the 40's with very little wind.  I got out a little after 3pm and it had cooled off and a steady breeze blew in.  Overall, still not too bad.  I ran the "condo and back" 3.2 mile course in Farmington. I felt pretty strong and was picking up the pace towards the end of the run.

Eric Hopkins sponsored these miles (131-133).  Thanks again Hoppy--I owe you one more of the ten miles you sponsored.

Today Lindsay Knauf sponsored a mile.  Thanks Lindsay, you have mile 202.  Lindsay is the author of the 26in2013forsandyhook blog.  She is running 26 races this year, one for each Sandy Hook victim.  She is running for Victoria Soto on Saturday in Stratford and Daniel Barden on Sunday.  Please drop by Lindsay's blog to wish her well.  I met Lindsay at the McCluskey 5-Miler in Milford on Jan. 27 and she really is an inspiration.

I also received an email from a sponsor of 10 miles who wished to remain anonymous.  Thank you Anonymous for your kind words and donation.  You have miles 203-212.

Feb. 5 - 4.4 Miles Ran, Rest Day for Sponsors

Nice day for a run--a little chilly but absolutely no wind.  I ran the Batterson Lake Loop with the Stanley Park extension.  The run covered miles 126-130, all sponsored by Eric Hopkins.  Thanks Hoppy, I appreciate your support.

The sponsors took a well-earned day off today.  I want to thank everyone who's sponsored miles to date--your generosity is a big boost to Steve and Becky's cause and absolutely motivating for me.  There have been several days on which a sponsor's email or post inspired me to get out an run rather than get consumed by the events of the day.  I announced my effort on January 14, and only 3 weeks later you all have sponsored 224 miles--that' really amazing.  THANK YOU!

Feb 4 - Rest Day, 5 Miles Sponsored

Took a rest day today after a good weekend of running and a couple steak sandwiches on Superbowl Sunday.  Vin Lyon-Callo, the goalie on the great Masuk soccer team of 1981, sponsored 5 miles and said that he'd consider joining me for the last 5 miles.  This is a serious commitment for a former goalie as one of the primary motivations for playing the position is limiting this activity (just kidding Vin and other goalies out there!)  Also, in case there are any Masuk sports historians out there, the greatness of the `81 team was based more on the cast of characters on the team than our won-loss record.

Vin, you have miles 196-200, which I should reach in a little less than 3 weeks.  That will be a fun run as I get to hit up my Dad for another contribution after reaching the 200 mile marker.  Thanks for your support Vin and I'll look for you around mile 996.

Busy work day ahead tomorrow but I should be able to get at least 3 miles in.

Feb. 3 - 4.9 Miles Ran, 5 Miles Sponsored

Nice 4.9 mile run today.  Many fine dogs in Colchester added their barks of encouragement along the way.  If I get the nerve I may do a photo shoot of my canine friends during a run and post the pics here.  I also had a running buddy for half of the run.  Greg Ruel and I have been trying to catch up all weekend and since I had my cell phone for pics I figured what better time to return his latest call.  I had just started a long hill when I called so fortunately Greg did most of the talking.  Greg deserves a lot of credit; he has been a great friend to the Kowalski's with a lot of behind the scenes support.

I completed miles sponsored by my sister Beth McGuire (121-123), Eric Hopkins (124) and Joanne DeMace (125).  I should also note that my sister did her third ever road race this morning in New Haven.  Way to go Beth!  Thanks to her, Hoppy and Joanne for sponsoring today's miles.

Sharon Christo MacEachern sponsored 5 miles today.  Thanks Sharon!  You have miles 191-195 which should be a little less than 3 weeks away.

Feb. 2 - 10.3 Miles Ran, 10 Miles Sponsored

There's still time for the sponsors, but at the moment I'm up by 0.3 miles today.  I know there's one wiseguy/gal out there who will sponsor a mile and take my moment away.  I ran my 8 mile loop and added a 2.3 mile extension around Day Pond.  Nice day to run though the wind was coming at me that last 3 miles.

I realized that I neglected to highlight the sponsors of my run yesterday...sorry 'bout that Betsy Steiner (miles 107-109) and Kathy Lennon (110).  I know Kathy will not let me off the hook for that slight, but fortunately I can state out front that Kathy also sponsored miles (111-118) of today's run.  My sister Beth McGuire sponsored miles 119 and 120.  Thanks Betsy, Kath and sis' for your support.

Matt Colegrove, a veteran of the great Masuk soccer team of 1982, sponsored 10 miles on behalf of his family today.  Matt and I put a lot of mileage in on the Masuk soccer field back in the day (can I count any of those miles??)  Matt has miles 181-190, which should be little less than 3 weeks away.

I started to think of Chase towards the end of my run today.  I took it easy for most of the run given the increased mileage, but felt pretty good approaching the last mile.  I decided to pick up the pace and set a time goal for the finish, and really thought of Chase rooting me on.  We finished few seconds ahead of the goal, but the best part was looking at Chase's picture which we have in our kitchen--it's such a sweet, approving face--almost saying "I knew we could do it!".  I've posted a copy of that picture below.

Feb. 1 - 3.2 Miles Ran, 6 Miles Sponsored

I was able to get out before dawn and squeeze in 3.2 miles.  Though it was dark, it was a really nice run and ended with the sky lightening as I reached my driveway.  I tacked on a extra 10th of a mile to avoid the ice patches from two days ago.  I also arrived at my house just in time to say goodbye to Shea before she got on the bus (it comes at 6:25am, yikes!)

Tom Jones sponsored 2 more miles.  Tom is the first repeat sponsor--thanks!  Laura Engledrum Tutoli sponsored 4 miles and told me that her son attended preschool with Chase.  Laura said that Chase was the sweetest little boy.  Thanks for sharing that Laura, and good luck in your upcoming 5K.

Tom has miles 175 and 176 and Laura has miles 177-180.  I should reach these miles around Feb. 20 and 21.
