I have started this blog in honor of Chase Kowalski, one of the innocent souls taken in the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy on December 14, 2012.  I went to high school with Chase's parents, Steve and Becky Kowalski. Becky was a freshman when Steve and I were seniors.  Along with many neighbors, friends and classmates, I offered my support to the Kowalski's in the aftermath of the tragedy.  Amazingly, through their grace and strength, Steve and Becky have actually comforted the masses assembled to support them.  If nothing else comes of this blog, I hope it inspires you visit the Chase Kowalski Memorial Fund site to share in the strength of this family.  If you feel empty and powerless as a result of this senseless tragedy, like I did, the Kowalski's offer an antidote in their resilience and determination to honor their son's memory.  These traits leap off the screen at the Fund site.

Like many of those with direct or even tenuous connections to the Sandy Hook families, I have been searching for ways to pay a personal tribute to the children, in my case Chase.  I have settled on a commitment to run 1,000 miles in 2013 in honor of Chase.  Before he turned 7, Chase had already started to pursue a love of running, having completed (and winning) The Kids Who Tri Succeed triathlon last August.  Committing to a long-term running goal will allow me to connect with Chase every time I hit the pavement.

In addition to this simple gesture to the Kowalski family, I would also like to raise money to support their goal of opening one or more community centers in the Newtown area and perhaps beyond.  To that end, I will donate $1 for each mile I run.  I would also humbly ask that followers of this blog consider sponsoring one or more of my miles by donating $10 for each mile sponsored to the Memorial Fund.  For example, one mile sponsored = a $10 donation, two miles = $20 and so on.  I don't know if we'll get all 1,000 miles sponsored, but let's get started and see where it goes!  The details on how to sponsor miles can be found in the upper right corner of the blog under the title "How It Works".  If you have any questions about the process, please email me at kevelshea@gmail.com.

Lastly, if you are unable or unsure about making a financial commitment, please consider running a few miles in honor of Chase.  In addition to their specific goals, Steve and Becky also pray that Chase will touch people in small, personal ways--if he motivates a few people to share in his joy of running through this blog, that's a great start.

  1. Hi Kevin,
Count me in....I would like to sponsor two miles at the time. I myself was training for a marathon several years ago when a stress fracture only a month before the race took me out of the race. I am still in awe of people who can run such distances and I think this is an AMAZING way to support Becky and Steve in their efforts to create "Chase's Place". I wish it was more, but I am trying to spread my support out over time as things continue to unfold. Thank you and much success to you in your runs!

  2. Jennifer,
Thank you so much! You are the first to sponsor miles so you get miles 1 and 2! I ran these miles on New Year's Day as part of a 5K in Colchester, CT (Bacon Academy Resolution Run). I know the trials and tribulations of long distance running and am sorry you weren't able to get to run your marathon...hopefully you'll get to give it another shot some day. Thanks again, I really appreciate your support of my effort and the Kowalski's.
    Regards,Kevin

    1. Michele,
I have you down as the sponsor of mile 3. If you would like to sponsor any additional miles, just let me know. Mile three was part of my New Years Day 5K (Bacon Academy Resolution Run). Even though my time was slower than prior years I felt pretty strong--especially considering the midnight Mojito I had the night before the race!
      Thanks for your support!

  4. Thanks Michele! Should I sign you up to sponsor one mile? And since I am just starting out here, do you think the instructions in the "How It Works" section are clear enough? Any feedback you have is appreciated.

I'll try and keep track as it gets closer, but somehow can I also sponsor mile #444. I'm huge into numbers and that # is significant to me.

    1. Awesome Jules! Glad to have you on board. You have miles 4 and 444 (do I get to know the connection?) :) Mile 4 consisted of the last .1 mi. of the New Years Day 5K--I still try to finish these races strong but it probably doesn't look like it anymore! The rest of the mile was completed as part of a 3.6 mile loop I run at work. That was my coldest run to date (25 deg). Mile 444 will be completed on May 15 at my current pace--hopefully it will be a little warmer then. Blog followers should know that Juli is a great athlete and is probably the top candidate to fill in for me should my hammys stop working!
      Thanks Jules--I appreciate the support

    1. Great speaking with you today Chris and thanks for the emails. You have miles 5-23 and 292. The first batch of miles was completed from 1/2-1/8 with rest days on 1/4 and 1/7. I ran about 6 on Sat 1/5 followed by 5 on Sun 1/6 and felt pretty good despite the increase in mileage. As for mile 292, at the current pace I'll get there on 3/30--NCAA tourney time, but no Huskies so I should be able to log some serious miles...
      Thanks for your generosity--Brez

OK, let's check the mile chart...sorry I don't remember the girls names, so daughter 1 gets mile 54, daughter 2 55 and daughter 3 56. That's pretty cool because I did those miles today. I got stuck in another late meeting (all too common) but I got out on the roads after 4pm and put 3.6 mis. in. Might be TMI but I forgot to pack my running pants and had to run in shorts, but it wasn't too bad (high 30's). You and Rick have miles 57-59. I started mile 57 in today's run, and will probably finish 57-59 in my next run on Sat. (probably take a day off tomorrow).

    1. I love that idea Ruler! However, you must be prepared to drag me across the finish line. I don't quite know how to process such a terrible tragedy that ends up helping people reconnect, especially life long friends like you and me. All I know is that Chase has brought out a lot of good in people and I hope this somehow brings some solace to Becky and Steve.

According to the mile wizard I (we) are due to hit the 1000 mile mark on Oct. 29. If I slow down a little, we could cross the line a month later at the Manchester Road Race on Thanksgiving. Whenever it is, we'll make it happen.

      Much Love Ruler,
      Brez

    2. Brez - you have found your own special way to make a difference. The best we can do is to support Steve and Becky .. and honor Chase by reminding ourselves every day of the importance of our family, friends and community. This should change us all for the better.

By the way, Chase's birthday is on Halloween ... which may also be a good milestone for your 1000 mile mark. Give it some thought ... I"m sure you will figure out something cool. Manchester ... wow, would that put "The Duke" award back in play?

With all that said, I certainly don't want to constrain the Brez I know with deadlines or schedules ... :) Let me know when you are getting close, and I'll be there!

I'm very proud of what you are doing!

I appreciate your kind words but everyone should know how big a part you played in motivating my effort and in supporting the Kowalski's in general.

I haven't seen the article yet and I'm a little nervous--the last time I was in the Courier was back in HS--it was a basketball photo of me over the caption "Awkward But Effective" (for real, I have it in my scrap book). I have kind of adopted that caption as my mantra.

  47. Hi Kevin-
I just returned from a day up at the capitol with March for Change during which I thankfully did not have to march, let alone run! What a wonderful way for you to support Steve and his family and hopefully create something lasting and positive out of this senseless tragedy. I would like to sponsor you for 15 miles, five miles for each of my boys. Now like Robert Frost you "have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep"! Good luck and may the wind be at your back! Cheryl Renaud Dowd

  48. Hi Cheryl!
Thank you so much for your generous donation and support! Regarding your visit to the capitol, I guess you were in the STAND for Change chapter of the movement? Or is it appropriate to call it a movement when you're stationary? OK, one more...with the weather I've been running in I've been thinking more about Jack than Robert Frost. Sorry for the Henny Youngman channel there--though it kinda reminds me of the content of our endless phone conversations back in the day!
Seriously, I appreciate your support and am really glad to hear from you. One of the secondary benefits from my endeavor has been reconnecting with many old (er, long-time) friends like you. I hope to see you soon--I know you are eagerly awaiting your enlistment into the 30th reunion planning committee. :)

I am going to start with sponsoring three miles and may sponsor more later on. Since others have asked for certain miles, I won't be shy! I would like mile# 665, I added up all the addresses I lived at while in school in Monroe; mile# 683, for when we graduated with Steve; and mile# 913, my anniversary.

    Great idea you've got here.

I also registered to "run" (I'm more of a walker) the 5K on Sat 3/23 virtually, since I am not sure I can make it to Hartford. IF I do make it, I'll see you there.

  58. Hi Kevin, this is Len Gutman. In our exchange from Jan 29/30 I have promised to honor Chase with the 6 mile run/walk of the Central Park Perimeter in NYC. Unfortunately due to very cold weather and my persistent sinus infection I was not able to do so until today when I also suddenly realized that we're one week away from Sandy Hook run and I'm kind of out of shape. So I was able to successfully navigate Central Park North and turn to 5th ave but at 79 Street I was blocked by the St. Patrick day Parade. While it was fun to join Irish friends in their celebration (Kevin, if you're Irish- congrats just in case),I had to take a shortcut in the park itself, there was simply no other way. I emerged from the park at Columbus Circle and proceed back north via Central park West. I stopped at 72 street and went to Strawberry fields. Miraculously for a minute or so the tourists dissipated and I was alone there with some guy playing guitar and singing 'let it be' and light snow falling. Looking at the snowflakes I thought about Chase and other kids and teachers lost and their families and their friends supporting them through these terrible times... and how love wins over evil every time. Then, of course, the life moved on and the hordes of tourists returned but the 'imagine circle' and music and thoughts were already imprinted in me and with that I continued up north without further ado (i did a detour around Museum of Nat. History though to compensate for the shortcut in the park - fair is fair) and finished at 110 Street and CPW. I felt good and inspired, I probably did 60/40 running/walking-it was impossible to run in places due to parade and celebrants especially in the southern part of the park, but I feel this is OK for March 23, as I will be with my 4yo boy who definitely will not be able to run 3 miles,so we'll do the same walk/run routine.
Here is the link to the pictures of my little adventure. http://instagram.com/lenstimpy. I attached Chase Picture from FB to my jacket sleeve during my run(hope Rebecca and Stephen are OK with that).

Also, inspired by my success today I'd like to sponsor another 6 miles which I will ,of course, match with another perimeter effort sometime in Spring/early Summer. Can I have 3 miles around mile 509 and 3 miles around mile 812 (these are my sons birthdays).
Thank Kevin, hope to see you on March 23. We're with 'Olivia Rose' team.

I be with the Race 4 Chase team which will be gathering at 180 Allyn St. across from the Metro Center parking lot. It's going to be very busy tomorrow but hopefully I'll get a chance to say Hi and Thank You.

  71. Kevin,

Throughout the year I’ve been loosely following this blog which I have found to be very inspirational, and I commend your efforts and commitment!

Tom, Renee, and Jim Zingo would like to sponsor 26 miles.

Since it looks like you’re almost finished, you won’t need to run any extra – between the three of us we ran, rollerbladed, and hiked over half of these two weeks ago when we all got together at Renee’s place in San Diego, and I ran and skated the rest last weekend here in Atlanta. If there are a couple of leftover miles, keep two in mind for our late parents Irene and Arthur, who helped out with this.

    Thanks,
    Tom

  72. Hi Tom,

Thanks for following the blog and for your very generous support! The rest of my miles have been sponsored but I have a bunch that I've completed that were unsponsored. I've assigned you miles 845-870, which I completed on July 25 (final 2 of 5.5 miles), July 27 (5.1 miles) and July 28 (18 miles). Those were some pretty cool days in the life of the 1,000 mile effort. I posted my plans for completing the trek on July 25, and the 5 miles on July 27 were fantastic--good pace (7:34) but comfortable. The 18 miler was brutal as I ran out of gas at 15 up big hill. I remember you as a long distance runner so I think you can appreciate my struggle there! Still, that run will help me as I train for a marathon this fall.

I really appreciate your generosity, Tom. Even though I had to assign you miles retrospectively, I will keep you, your family and especially your parents in mind as I finish up the journey.

    My Best,
    Kevin
