Aug. 30 - 8 Miles Ran, 55 Miles Sponsored; Aug 31 - Rest Day

It was an awesome penultimate day of running on the road to 1,000.  I had a nice easy 8-mile run over the Cato Corner, Rt. 16 route Fri night.  This route is very hilly, but I took it at a comfortable, even pace so that I wouldn't be feeling any ill effects of the run on Sunday.  Planning for Sunday's finale kept me busy until a little before 7pm last night, so I got out a little late and finished the run at dusk.  I guess summer has whizzed by again--I failed to anticipate how dark it would be around 8 when I finished.

I completed miles 979-986, closing out the 50 miles sponsored by my good buddy Keith Webster.  Thanks Web, I'm sorry to inform you that I actually enjoyed these miles.  If you up for sponsoring me in an Ironman triathlon, that may be another story....

Amazingly, the sponsors have returned in force as I close out the 1,000 mile effort.  Mike Lester, a Masuk classmate and long-time friend, sponsored 50 miles through his company, Triumph Marketing.  This is an awesome way finish my journey (though Mike is probably chuckling at making me continue on to 1,050 miles).  I also received a message from Carrie Kammire Greenwood--another Masuk classmate, good friend from back in the day and co-President of the Masuk Class of `83 (the president who did all the work).  Carrie donated 5 miles and let me know that she has been cheering me on from down south all along.  Thanks for you support Carrie!

Today is a rest day before tomorrow's finale.  The weather looks a little iffy, but hopefully we'll won't have a lot of rain to deal with over the last mile.  I am so excited that I don't care if I get drenched over the first 13 miles--but I don't want our Race4Chase team to cross the finish line dripping wet if we can avoid it!

I will be heading to Monroe shortly to go over some last minute plans with my family.  It looks like we may have a DJ to play some music for an hour and if all goes well, I should be able to call in from my iPhone to do a video chat during the run.  This will let the Race4Chase group know where I am as I approach Chalk Hill.  Or we could have tech issues and everyone milling around until I show up around 12:30pm!  I wish I had Carrie to help me get things buttoned down like in the old days!  No matter what happens, it will be great to share the final mile with those who have supported my effort and care so much about Chase.

Logistics for tomorrow:  I plan to leave Bethel High around 10:30am (maybe a few minutes earlier) and run down Rt. 302 to Monroe, reaching Camp Tepee off Rt. 59 around 11:50.  I will then head to Chalk Hill hoping to arrive around 12:30.  I plan to spend a minute or two at Bethel High and Camp Tepee placing Race4Chase batons (see pics below) with instructions for the finder to complete an athletic activity in honor of Chase and then pass the baton and instructions off to another person.  I've also asked that the "finder" post a comment on my blog so that the effort can be shared with Steve and Becky.  I chose the locations after speaking with Becky; she told me Chase started running track meets at Bethel High and played his first baseball games at Camp Tepee.  Hopefully this will be a way to keep the 1,000 mile effort going a little longer, but of course that will be up to the people who find the batons.

Last item--I will have a book for all participants to sign tomorrow.  In addition to listing your name, I think it would be great if you would also write down an athletic pledge (walk a mile next week, run a 5k, etc.) or if that's not your cup of tea just jot down a memory of Chase or a message to Steve and Becky.  If you have any pictures or other items you'd like to include in the book that would be great too.

See you tomorrow at the 999 mark!

Aug. 29 - 4 Miles Ran

Lightning quick post before work...got 4 miles in around Day Pond yesterday evening...mile count is up to 978.  Hopefully 8 today and then 14 on Sunday.  Planning for Sunday is coming together, looks like we could have 25-50 people.  Can't wait!

More about Th's run later...

OK, its Sat. morning.  A lot to do, so I'll just say that I completed miles 975-978 on run, sponsored by good ol' Web (Keith Webster).  Thanks again Web.

Aug. 28 - 4 Miles Ran

It was an early Wed morning for the Bresna house as Shea began her first day of 7th grade.  Her bus comes at 6:20am, which essentially gets the family going around 5:30am.  After a mini fashion show and a little scrambling to finish a summer learning packet, Shea was off to school, and I had time for a nice, easy 4 mile run around Day Pond (2 laps).  In furtherance of my goal to "broadcast" part of my final run, I made a FaceTime call to Ellie during my run and it met with moderate success.  The call disconnected after a few minutes but we were able to reconnect.  The last missing piece to recreate this at Chalk Hill on Sun is an internet connection at the school, but I think we should be able to create a hotspot there with either Ellie's or my sister's phone.  We'll see how it turns out.

It was a little muggy but still fairly cool at 7am.  Between fiddling around with my phone and taking a few pictures of the misty pond, I had a very leisurely run.  I completed miles 971-974, sponsored by Keith Webster.  Thanks a lot Web, nice to be running for you down the stretch!  I plan to do a 4 mile run today (Th) and 8 on Fri which will bring my total to 986 miles, setting me up for a prep day on Sat and the 14-mile finale on Sun.

Aug. 26 - Rest Day; Aug. 27 - 4 Miles Ran

The final week begins!  I took Monday off after 4 consecutive days of running including a pretty tiring weekend in NYC.  I got back out there after work today for 4 miles in Glastonbury.  The humidity is back, but overall it was not too bad.  The hard part of today's run was overcoming a late night of planning for the finale on Sun.  I have been trying to work out a ton of logistical issues-permits, parking, police escorts, tent, support at Chalk Hill, returning people to their cars, even the possibility of broadcasting parts of my run to those waiting at Chalk Hill (I know, a little over the top but hey, why not try to finish in style?)

Other big news...thanks to Becky Kowalski, I am now an official entrant in the 2013 New York Marathon.  Apparently, 1,000 miles doesn't cut it anymore!  Seriously, this is an unbelievable opportunity that I greatly appreciate--now I have 8 weeks to ramp up from 8-10 mile runs to 26!  I would love to continue my fundraising efforts for Chase's Memorial Fund, but I know the Race4Chase teammates connected with my effort have already given generously.  I'll have to find a way to reach out to a broader scope--if any blog followers have ideas, please let me know.

I completed miles 967-970, sponsored by Keith Webster.  Thanks Web!

Aug. 24 - 8.1 Miles; Aug. 25 - 7.6 Miles in the Big Apple

Great penultimate weekend of running on the way to 1,000.  I put in 8.1 in Colchester before driving to New York City for the weekend, and then ran 7.6 in the city Sun morning.  The run on Sat was nice--I tried to stay at a very comfortable pace which turned out to be 7:58/mile.  I tried to imagine running at this pace for 26 miles, and while I felt good at that pace, I did have to work a bit up hills.  This probably means sub-8 is a little too fast for a marathon right now; I really shouldn't feel like anything has leaked out of the tank after 8 miles with 18 more to go.  I will keep tinkering with this as the NYC marathon approaches.

Sun's run was amazing.  The Bresna family went to Citi Field to see the Mets meekly fall to the Tigers on Sat.  The best parts of the game were the weather (perfect), watching my daughter keep a scorecard and the sweet grilled sausage and pepper grinder (ok, and the late inning snack - steak and cheese sandwich).  With all that stadium food still weighing me down Sun morning, I lugged myself out of our hotel room at Times Square and headed down to the Freedom Tower at the south end of Manhattan.  I ran down 8th Ave. to Hudson, then W. Broadway to Greenwich Ave.  The memorial site at the footings of the World Trade Center towers is pretty ensnarled in construction and was not visible from the street.  Passes are required and I arrived before it opened to the public, so I didn't get to see that.  But the tower was certainly impressive and just thinking about the events of 9/11 and the hallowed grounds was really powerful.

I put in 3.5 miles from 8th and 43rd to the Trade Center area, and 4.1 on my way back.  I ran out to the Hudson River which extended the return run a bit.  Sat and Sun's miles took my total up to 966--amazing, only 34 to go, with 14 coming on the Sept. 1 finale.  So only 20 miles of running between now and next Sun.  I can't believe how close the finish line is!

Miles 951-956 on Sat were sponsored by Scott Szymanski & his Mets (Willie Mays (72-73); Willie Montanez (78-79); Willie Randolf (92); Wilmer Flores (13); Wilson Delgado (04) and Wilson Valdez (09))

Miles 957-58 on Sat and 959-66 on Sun were sponsored by Steve Kavanaugh.  I have to work out an arrangement with my buddy Steve (Budman) as I promised to wear a Celtics jersey on the run and not only did I fail to do so, I ran his miles in his least favorite locale, New York City.  In my defense, I went into a Nike store in Manhattan which had every jersey imaginable (including Brooklyn Nets Pierce and Garnett jerseys) but not surprisingly there was no Celtics jersey in the joint.  I  have a week to honor my promise and may have to horse trade some miles but I will get it done.

Aug. 23 - 4.2 Miles Ran

Quick post before I try to squeeze a run in before our family trip to New York City today.  I ran 2 laps around Day Pond plus a 0.4 mile extender for 4.2 miles last night.  It was really nice out around 6pm when I ran.  I spent most of the day cleaning the house after 4 days of Daddy Camp pretty much ravaged the place, but I still felt decent on the run.

I was interviewed by Jake Kara, the editor of the Monroe Patch, yesterday.  It must have been his easiest interview, because once I got going, I just couldn't stop rambling on about all of the amazing things that have occurred during my 1,000 mile journey (well, 950 miles to date), especially the connection that I and others have felt with Chase's pure spirit and zest for life.  He said he should be publishing an article next week in advance of the last leg of 1,000 miles on Sept. 1.

I completed miles 947-950 yesterday.  They were sponsored by Scott Szymanski in honor of the following Met players:

Willard Hunter (1962, 1964)

Aug. 21 - Rest Day; Aug. 22 - 4.5 Miles Ran

Daddy Camp held it's marathon of fun on Wednesday so running was not in the offering.

After a full day at Six Flags followed by a sleepover on Tuesday, the camp director (me) and the campers (Shea and her friend Jackie) woke up pretty worn out.  However, the lure of the Six Flags Thrill Pass (free admission to the park for the season from our Tue passes), was too strong.  So off to Agawam we go for Day 2.  I set a strict 4pm deadline for our return which had us heading home promptly at 6:15pm.  (Daddy Camp is like the anti-boot camp--I will have a lot of reprogramming to do before school starts next Wed).  Next was setting up the tent and inflatable movie screen for a back yard movie, with lights out firmly at 10pm (10:45pm in reality).  Between being the Sherpa at Six Flags (towels, water bottles, etc.) and setting up the backyard bonanza, I was pretty shot at the end of the night.

I fought off the urge to do a Six Flags triathlon, figuring that the rare back to back sleepover had me sufficiently covered on the fun meter.  Jackie's Mom ended up inviting Shea to join her and Jackie for a nail appointment, so the best buds were able to get another day together, and Daddy Camp got to shut down for maintenance for a half of day.

I put in 4.5 miles, feeling utterly exhausted as I trudged up the Cemetery Rd hill to start the run.  I did the first mile in 9:14, which is my survival pace (though it's really like 8:30ish given the hill).  However,  my legs came back to me after the first mile, and I was able to put in 7:35, 7:14 and 7:18 miles coming in.  This was really a pleasant surprise as I felt fairly comfortable despite the rigors of Daddy Camp, including its less than nutritional fair (i.e. fried dough at Six Flags, McDonalds Tue night and pizza Wed night--just typing that in made me a little queasy).

I completed miles 942-946, sponsored by Len Gutman (942-43) and Scott Szymanski (944-46).  Thanks gentlemen!  For Scott and his Mets connection, I ran for Wayne Kirby (`98), Wayne Twitchell (`79) and Wes Gardner (`84-`85).

Aug 20 - 5.5 Miles Ran

Logged another 5.5 miles before Day 2 of Daddy Camp began.  I took Shea and her friend to Six Flags this afternoon--if I counted the miles I traversed as the group's mule I think I would've hit the 1,000 mark today.  Not much strategy employed in choosing rides.  Hey's Ride A was fun.  Let's try Ride ZZZ now, it's only 8 slushie stands away!  Yeah, great idea!  That said, it's awesome to watch good friends buddy up in a place that's pure fun for them.

I ran the Pinebrook loop with a little extender for 5.5 miles.  I felt decent, though I could definitely feel heat and humidity coming back in the mid-moringin (around 10:30 a.m.).

I completed miles 937-941, sponsored by Len Gutman--thanks Len!

Aug. 19 - Rest Day (from Running), 39 Miles Sponsored

Today for the first official day of "Daddy Camp".  I try to take time off each year before Shea goes back to school so we can spend some QT together before the grind resumes.  I find this time ever-more precious as we near the teenage blackout years so many have warned me about.  After I finished some chores, we headed out to the town playground for some soccer, rollerblading and basketball.  Soccer went fine, though at one point I was channelling the Great Santini as I tried to shift into a higher gear to get the ball before her, but gained no ground.  I'm proving that no matter how many miles you run Father Time always has the last laugh.

Shea then wanted to go rollerblading, which is not a Dad activity, especially with me promising everyone I know that I'll be finishing the 1,000 miles in two weeks.  So I brought Shea down to unoccupied tennis courts to "blade" while I shot baskets at the nearby b-ball court.  I was quickly reminded that I had not used the hoop muscles in some time.  Once, with the echoes of adoring Masuk fans' cheers (well at least my Mom and Dad's) ringing in my ears, I ran to keep a ball in bounds and jumped for a shot, only to have to pick up the various tendons, ligaments and synovial membrane that scattered over the court surface during the sequence.  I will have to lace up the running shoes extra tight to keep the body parts somewhat aligned during tomorrow's run.

Enough with the aging woes and on to the happy news--it has been a great couple of days for the sponsors.  My good friend Scott Szymanski sponsored 13 miles yesterday.  We were hanging out at his beach house in Westbrook when he agreed to pick up miles 944-956.  Scott and I are big Mets fans (obvious gluttons for punishment) and we were brainstorming for Met connections to these numbers.  It's still a work in progress but we found out the Mets have had 961 players in their history play at least 1 game for the team.  We and the Elias Sports Bureau are now trying to determine the 944th through 956th players in Met history (by order of appearance).  I should have time to figure this out on one my upcoming long runs!

Tom Zingo and his family members Renee and Jim sponsored 26 miles recently.  Tom is a high school classmate of mine and I remember him as a good runner (I think on both the cross country and track teams).  In his comment to the blog Tom mention that he, Renee and Jim rollerbladed, ran and hiked a bunch of miles a few weeks back.  I love the rollerblading connection and it's great to hear that Tom is still engaged in these healthy activities--the kind of activities that Chase loved.  Steve and Becky hope Chase's spirit can motivate many others to enjoy them as well.  Thanks Scott and Tom, your support is much appreciated.

Aug. 17 - Rest Day; Aug. 18 - 12.2 Miles Ran

I took yesterday off for a beach day in Watch Hill with the family.  Today I just finished an awesome 12.2 mile run.  It was my best run in months!  Apparently grilled seafood washed down with Sangria is an effective way to fuel up the night before for a moderately-long run.

I ran the modified Colchester Half Marathon course from 10:30am to noon.  I did the first half in about  49 minutes and the second in 46--the coveted negative split.  Even better I had splits of 7:33, 7:33, 7:49, 7:15 and 7:15 coming in.  I don't think I need any down time, so it's off to the next family adventure!

I completed miles 924-936, sponsored by Keith Webster (924-929) and Len Gutman (936).  Thanks guys, glad to have you in on today's awesome run.

Aug. 16 - 4.5 Miles Ran

OK, the description of Friday's run following this initial paragraph is not for the refined, the weak-stomached or anyone consuming or about to consume food.  I ran the Day Pond Loop, 3 laps, for total of 4.5 miles.  The weather was very nice when I got out around 4pm.  However, the events just after the 1.5 mile mark created the need for the advisory to those of weak constitutions.

If you are still reading I trust you have digested my admonitions, so let's proceed.  This was a DefCon 1 run, and as many long-distance runners know, the Def does not stand for "Defense".  Before most runs, I do my normal systems check which normally entails a quick trip to the bathroom.  This run was no different.  With no problems apparent, I headed out under the default DefCon 5.  At about the half mile mark, things changed.  A strong tummy rumble dropped the rating down to DefCon 4, which is really not a big concern as I would guess that status occurs at some point in 25-30% of my runs.  However, as I got on the Day Pond road (1 mile mark) we had a quick drop to DefCon 2.  This fairly rare event requires maximum concentration and even increased pace to get back home, and can even require an aborted run to return immediately home.  As I entered the pond loop around the 1.3 mile mark, however, the sirens sounded for DefCon 1.  In a lifetime of running, I have experienced DefCon 1 three times; all of them resulting in the kind of stories that are only told at or near closing time.

Amazingly, however, I survived Friday's DefCon 1 with no collateral damage.  You have probably deduced that DefCon 1 requires immediate action, and therefore you ask, how can there be no collateral damage during a jog in the woods?  Well, Day Pond is a state park and I can now tell you with precision (thanks to the Garmin) that the Men's facilities at the park are 1.62 miles from my mailbox where I started the run.  No one ever wants to experience DefCon 1 on a run, but if it happens, you cannot be more fortunate to have facilities 3/10ths of mile away.

For anyone who didn't heed my warning, I'm sorry for ruining your dessert.

I completed miles 920-923, sponsored by Keith Webster.  Well, how appropriate; Keith was hoping to vicariously enjoy my pain in completing his 50 miles.  Well, he probably couldn't have anticipated the method of delivery of the pain, but there it was nonetheless.

Aug. 14 - Rest Day; Aug. 15 - 8.1 Miles Ran

Quick post before work....Took yesterday off, hoped to get a run in early evening yesterday but we had a family emergency--Shea needed a Superhero shirt for Superhero Day at camp and that of course required a last minute trip to the mall.  Fortunately, it wasn't a bad day to take off after two decent running efforts on Mon and Tue.

I had a fantastic run this incredibly cool morning.  Temps were in the mid 50's at the start.  I ran 3 Day Pond loops, unfortunately scaring the bejesus out of a poor women wearing headphones who thought she was on a solitary run in the woods, and then ran the Pinebrook loop.  I called out from behind the woman to warn her of my approach but the headphones foiled this effort.

I completed miles 912-919.  Robynne Wildman sponsored mile 913 and the beloved Mrs. Garrity sponsored mile 916.  Thanks Robynne and Mrs. G!

Aug. 11 - Rest Day; Aug. 12 - 4.5 Miles Ran

Beautiful early evening run around Day Pond.  Interestingly, there was nary a soul at the pond on a very nice evening.  Maybe the steady presence of the huffing and spitting 1,000 mile man has finally driven the crowds away!

I did three laps for a total of 4.5 miles.  I was pretty sore from many hours of yard work on Sunday, but felt very good at the end of the run.  It amazes me how pulling weeds for a few hours ends up taxing the body more than a 10-mile run.  Maybe if I did yard work more regularly...

I completed miles 903-906, sponsored by Kevin Farkas (903) and Keith Webster (904-906).  I'm pretty sure Kevin and Keith were neighborhood friends back in the day.  Thanks for your sponsorship fellas!

It's long past time for me to send out a HUGE thank you to the person made the entire effort possible--my wife Ellie.  Today was a perfect example.  I couldn't get out to run at lunch so I called leaving work and asked if I could get a quick run in after work.  She says "no problem" even though this unexpectedly puts her on dinner detail.  Seems like no big deal until you multiply that x 100, throw in a few 20 mile runs with the commensurate 4 hour recovery and appreciate that she works full time and is going to school.  So THANK YOU Ellie, there's no way I could have done this without you!

Aug. 8-9 - Rest Days; Aug 10 - 10 Miles Ran, 5-10 Miles Sponsored

I took Th and F off in my continued effort to calibrate the end of the 1,000 miles for Sept. 1, but wanted to test my fitness level with a medium-long run on Sat, so I put in a 10-miler.  I figured I'd be strong with all the rest recently, and I felt great for about 8 miles.  Once again a hill took out my legs and turned a 7:50 min/mi effort into an 8:05.  This tells me I need to dig down and really train for the New York Marathon, not just fine tune after the 1,000 miles are complete.  But it can and will be done!

I ran one lap around Day Pond and then the Cato Corner, Rt. 16 course.  I was a little hot, but breezy enough that it wasn't oppressive.  The family and I went to a beach party later in the day, and knowing that I needed to be functional after the run, I didn't press through the last two miles.  I was glad to get some decent miles in after all the recent rest.

I completed miles 893-902, sponsored by Len Gutman (893-900) and Kevin Farkas (901-902).  Thanks gentlemen, glad to hit the 900 mile marker with your miles!  Thanks for your support.

An old college friend touched base and sponsored 5 and, depending on my tolerance for humility, 10 miles.  Steve Kavanaugh is one of the funniest people I know, in addition to being a great guy, but his stubborn allegiance to all things Boston can be a bit trying at times.  Example: when his TV went on the blink in college he taped a picture of the Bobby Orr's flying 1970 Stanley Cup goal (see below) to the screen and left it that way for at least the next 5 of his undergraduate years.  Well, trusty ol's Budman (his college nickname) is at it again--he has offered to double his sponsorship of 5 miles if I run the miles in a Celtics jersey.  Being a Knick fan, I am not happy about this.  Of course Race4Chase trumps sports allegiances, so Bud is going to get his wish.  The only question is, do I go fine print and wear a Glasgow Celtic soccer jersey or do I honor the spirit of his request.  Tough call because Bud is the kind of guy who will tuck a photo of me in a Boston Celtics jersey away for 20 years and bring it out at the worst possible moment!

Despite the forthcoming humiliation, thanks go out to Bud for thinking of Chase and supporting the cause.  Maybe he'll spur some Knick fans to make things right!
