Feb. 28 - 5.1 Miles Ran

Got out for a nice 5.1 mile run this afternoon.  The rain held off and the winds were low so conditions were very favorable.  I completed miles 211-215 sponsored by Anonymous (miles 211-212) and The Connelly Family (miles 213-215) on behalf of their son Thomas.  The Connelly family is the first of many sponsors connected to the Rocky Heights Middle School in Colorado.  Thank you Anonymous, The Connelly's and all the folks at Rocky Heights.

Feb. 27 - Happy Birthday Brady and Thank You (Again) Rocky Heights!

Another crazy day in the quest for 1,000 miles.  The following factors screamed Rest Day: a crammed full day of work; pouring rain and the need to be home by 6 (Wed is Ellie's school night).  But lurking in the sponsored miles was Brady Ott who turned 4 today.  A little over a week ago, Brady's Mom Megan sponsored two miles and asked that they be run on 2/27, Brady's birthday, and 7/5, daughter Kennedy's birthday.  I couldn't get out during the day, so, upon Ellie's return from school around 9pm, I laced up the shoes for a foggy 1-mile run to the end of the road and back.  Fortunately no cars, dogs or angry neighbors were out and about.  I have to admit that in a moment of weakness prior to the run I started thinking of excuses, but then I imagined Chase saying, "you're gonna run 1,000 miles, but miss the 4-year old sponsor's mile?  Nice."

I completed mile 210 during the run, which Brady shared with an anonymous donor.  Thanks again to this donor, a sponsor of 10 miles total.

Also, more great news from our friends at Rocky Heights Middle School in Colorado.  Celine Caliento-Wicks sent an email yesterday stating that people connected with the school have sponsored 3 more miles.  The Buras family sponsored 2 miles on behalf of their 7th grader Jacob, and three students, Anonymous, Megan G., Michaela F., sponsored 1 mile.  Thanks again to this great group out West.

Feb. 26 - 4.9 Miles Ran

Full work day ahead today so I got out for a run early this morning (6:45 a.m.).  It was light out the entire run--spring is right around the corner!  I felt really good, the soreness from the half marathon completely gone, so I logged 4.9 miles.  I had to estimate my time because my timer (app on my cell phone) reset somewhere along the run--time to get a new watch!

I covered miles 205-209, sponsored by an anonymous donor (he/she sponsored 10 miles, with 3 more for me to complete).  Thank you to this donor--I hope you're following the blog to know that I'm in the process of running your miles!

Lots of dogs cheering me on today, and one silent cow scanning me as I ran by her grazing area (hard to see but she's in on the left side of the hill in the picture below).

Feb. 25 - Rest Day

Rest day as soreness set in today and also had a fairly heavy workload today.  Too bad, looked pretty nice out side, especially around lunchtime.  Will be back at it tomorrow.

FYI, I had a little difficulty making a donation to the Chase Fund today and wanted to share the work-around.  The donation site apparently did not like my bank card, even though it normally operates as both a debit and credit card.  I was able to use another card (credit card only) to complete the donation.  I hope this hasn't been a problem for any others willing to sponsor miles or otherwise donate to the Fund.

Feb. 24 - 3.4 Miles Ran

Was a chauffeur for Shea (11) most of the day but was able to get out around 4:15 pm to try to loosen up after the long run yesterday.  My main route is still clogged with now blackening snow, so I ran up and down the streets leading to Day Pond to cover 3.4 miles.  I was pretty stiff and crept up the hills, but I think this run will help me recover a little faster.

I covered miles sponsored by Kevin Farkas (201), Lindsay Knauf, (202 - visit her blog at: 26in2013forsandyhook.blogspot.com) and an anonymous sponsor (203-204).  Thank you all for the support and donations.

The next planned race is a 5K in South Boston on March 17th followed by the The Run for the Families on March 23rd.  I understand that many people supporting the Kowalski's are planning to gather for the race on the 23rd.  I will post information about where to meet and any post-race activities here as it becomes available.

Feb. 23 - Colchester Half Marathon Completed!

Great day running in Colchester, hills and all.  As I indicated in my prior post, I was a little worried about the race given my very shaky preparation the day before.  I looked but couldn't find a sausage, egg and cheese McMuffin or tortilla chips on any pre-race diet planner.  However, the race worked out great!  Low winds, moderate temps (around 40 degrees), a nice group of runners and my wife and daughter cheering me on at the finish line made for a very nice day.  I wore my Race 4 Chase shirt and put out some flyers with the blog and Chase Fund info, and several people took an interest.  I also had a chat with the race director who was open to putting a link to blog on the Hartford Track Club website.

I hit the 200 mile mark near the end of the race.  The miles were sponsored by The Colegrove Family (miles 188-190), Sharon Christo MacEachem (191-195) and Vin Lyon-Callo (196-200).  Thanks all for your support.

I was surprised to feel pretty strong throughout the race.  I broke the race into three parts; the first 7 miles were for Chase, the next 3 for Steve and the last 3 for Becky.  I was a little conflicted during the last three because I felt pretty good and wanted to cut loose a little, but I heard Becky saying "you better not get hurt and get stuck on 200 miles for a month!"  So, probably like Chase, I listened...a little.

Feb 22. - Day of Rest, Prep for Colchester Half Marathon

Today was kind of a whirlwind.  I stayed over at my Dad's in Monroe last night after celebrating my sister's birthday and I've been playing catch up all day today.  Normally I would try to eat right and get hydrated the day before a long run but I wasn't able to stick to the plan today.  Hopefully a Subway sub and some chips provide enough carbs to get me to the finish line tomorrow.

I wanted to do a light jog this afternoon but opted for another day of rest after family duties called this afternoon.  May be just as well given that tomorrow is race day and I'm in okay but not great shape.

There were no new sponsors today, but I have posted a new pledge total following the anonymous donor's $1,000 pledge (payable in $100 increments at each 100 mile marker).  Thank you to this donor and all the sponsors that have given so much to support Steve and Becky.

There is a growing list of people who are planning to do the Run for the Families on March 23 in Hartford.  I am really looking forward to this event and meeting up with everyone supporting the Kowalski's.  If you are planning to attend please drop me a line here or on Facebook

I also ordered a "Race 4 Chase Team" t-shirt for the race tomorrow.  I understand that there may be an "official" t-shirt for the run on March 23rd, but I wanted to share my connection with Chase with the other runners tomorrow.  I've included pics of the t-shirt and the "Remember Chase" pin that Jim Pallock sent (thanks Jim!) below.

Feb. 21 - 3.2 Miles Ran, Generous Anonymous Sponsor

I had a nice late afternoon run today, though the wind was a bit obnoxious.  I am visiting at my Dad's tonight and will need to supplement this post tomorrow, but I was able to get 3.2 miles in before heading to Monroe and Sandy Hook to celebrate my sister's birthday.  We went to a restaurant named Figs and really enjoyed it!

I ran miles 185-187 sponsored by Matt Colegrove and Family.  Thanks Colegrove Family!  I am don't have access to information to update "Today's Line", but I will fix that tomorrow.

Gearing up for the Colchester Half Marathon on Sat.  The 13.1 miles will take me over the 200 mile mark and allow me to bill my Dad for another $100.  Amazingly, an anonymous donor has agreed to match my Dad's contributions, which will add another $1,000 to the pledge total.  Many thanks go out to this generous and humble individual.

Feb. 20 - Rest Day, 5 Miles Sponsored

Took a day off after the 10-miler.  I need a little recovery time before taking on 13 miles on Saturday.  Yesterday Madeline (Burte) Brajuha, a classmate from the University of Bridgeport, sponsored 5 miles.  Thanks Madeline, you have miles 306-310, which I should reach around March 27th.  Madeline is a runner and said that she will be thinking of Chase and the Kowalski family during her runs.

Feb. 19 - 10.4 Miles Ran

Had a great run today!  I took today off from work and had time to do a long run.  Lately I've been scrambling to get my runs in, so it was nice to take my time to enjoy the run.  I put in some extra miles to see if I'm ready to do the Colchester Half Marathon this Sunday.  It's a really hilly course and I think it will be tough, but I should be able to finish.

Today I covered the following miles:

175-176, sponsored by Tom Jones,
177-180, sponsored by Laura Engeldrum Tutoli and
181-184, sponsored by Matt Colegrove & Family.

Feb. 18 - 3.2 Miles Ran, Lotsa Connections

Got out for a decent 3.2 mile run late this afternoon.  I was feeling a little sluggish going out, but for a good reason.  After my run yesterday, my daughter Shea (11) was waiting for me to play with her in the snow.  Twenty-five degrees, high winds, snow mostly turned to ice...but how could I say no???  Plus my wife Ellie starts singing "Cats in the Cradle" if I even think about taking the easy way out.

I completed miles 171-174, sponsored by Karen Krajcik Myette.  Thanks for supporting my effort Karen!

I heard from quite a few people today, maybe because an article about this endeavor was published in the Monroe Courier:

Thank you the Courier reporter Karen Dydzuhn who really captured the essence of this effort and the close-knit community that has gathered in support of the Kowalski's.

The following people offered their support today (or late yesterday):

Megan Ott:
Megan is friends with Lindsay Knauf (26in2013forsandyhook.blogspot.com).  Megan made t-shirts that Lindsay wears during her races, one for each child and student lost in the tragedy.  Megan asked to sponsor two miles on particular dates (2/27 for her son Brady, and 7/5 for her daughter Kennedy).  This may complicate the accounting of miles a little, but here the customer is always right.  I will assign Megan's miles when I reach the two dates, and if all the miles for those dates have been previously sponsored (likely for the 2/27 miles), we'll just double up.  Megan, thanks for your support!

Shelby Siems:
Shelby sent an email to let me know that her son Christopher, age 9, was one of 21 children who performed a song in honor of the Newtown families.  Her son was picked to represent Chase, and he made a sign depicting Chase's interests.  Shelby believes Steve and Becky now have Christopher's sign.  Shelbly said you  can find the song on Youtube via the "26 angels" Facebook page.  She also blogged about Christopher's experience in her Dec. 26, 2012 post at www.singlemadmom.blogspot.com

Jim McDonald:
I next heard from my old friend Jim (Masuk `81).  With three boys in each family all the same age, the McDonalds and Bresnahans spent a lot of time together in our youth.  Jim was a really good soccer player and track athlete at Masuk, a senior when I was a sophomore.  It was great playing soccer and running with him back in the day.  Jim has agreed to join the Race4Chase team in Hartford on March 23--it will be great catching up with him (only figuratively if the race is anything like our high school track days).  Thanks for joining the cause, Jim!

Jeff Bates:
Lastly, Jeff (Masuk `82) chimed in on Facebook and said that he's like to sponsor some miles.  I directed him to the blog site--hopefully the instructions are clear enough but if not I'll talk him through (I offer a full-service blog).  Thanks for getting in touch and supporting the effort, Jeff!

Lastly thank you to everyone who has commented about and/or "liked" all things Chase on Facebook...we are all better off if we keep his spirit close everyday.

Feb. 17, 7.1 Miles Ran, 13 Miles Sponsored

Tough day out there, mid 20's and high winds.  I guess a few days in the mid 40's made me a little soft because I really had to drag myself out there today.  Other than periodic head winds and the loop around the unplowed Day Pond, the run turned out okay.  I pretty much speedwalked about 7/10ths of a mile around pond.  I passed a couple of snow shoers and thought I could run in their tracks...um, not so much.  My feet kept punching through the crusty top layer so I ended up high-stepping around the entire loop--took me about 13 minutes to "run" 0.7 miles and I'm sure it didn't look pretty.

I completed miles 164-169 sponsored by Ashish Modi and 170 sponsored by Karen Krajcik Myette.  Thanks Ashish and Karen!

Christina Hansen and Family (Scott, Pavel and Nikita) from Monroe sponsored 13 miles.  Christina will be running a half marathon (13.1 miles) in April and was graciously willing to sponsor a similar amount of miles.  Thanks Christina for your generosity and best of luck in the racel.  Hopefully you can think of Chase and get a boost during some part of the race.  The Hansen Family has miles 291, 293-300 and 302-305.  At my current pace I should reach mile 305 on March 27th.

Big Day for Chase on April 7th

I received the following Facebook message from Lindsay Knauf who is running 26 races this year, one in honor of each student and teacher lost in the Sandy Hook tragedy.  You can visit her blog at http://26in2013forsandyhook.blogspot.com

She recently informed me that she will be racing in honor of Chase on April 7th in Danbury:

Hunted you down on facebook, thought it would be easier than trying to message you through your blog. I hope that's ok! I think I have my race planned for Chase and I wanted to give you as much heads up as possible. I'm going to do the Stratton Faxon Greater Danbury Road Race in his honor and I would love it if you could join me. It's on April 7th. They have a 1/2 marathon if you want to do the long run to get in your miles. I'm only going to do the 5k though.

We've got time, but I wanted to let you know

Hope your feet are holding up! Oh, and side note. I saw that we have a mutual friend- Laurie Champagne. I worked for her for years and love her.

Take care Kevin! Chat soon I hope!

I met Lindsay at the McCluskey 5 miler in Milford on Jan. 27th and she is a wonderful person who is committed to helping all the families.  I have signed up to run with her that day, though if she is really fit she might not want some old dude running at the 1,000 mile/year pace slowing her down.

Feb. 16 - 3.2 Miles Ran

Had to do a few hours in the office this today, but I was able to get in 3.2 mile run while there.  I started off pretty sluggish, but felt better after a mile or so.  Big kudos go out to my wife Ellie for keeping the home front together while I log miles and deal with some heavy work demands.

I covered miles 161-163 which were sponsored by Ashish Modi.  Thanks for your support Ashish.

I'm hoping to do a long run tomorrow to get ready for the Colchester Half Marathon next weekend.  Better get it in early--need to spend some QT with the family and I don't think they are up for 10 miles with me!

Took a rest day today, partly to prep for a long run this weekend and partly due to work demands (arggh).  It's been a long week dealing with the snow, roads, work, etc. so a rest day was probably a good idea.

Tom Jones sponsored 2 more miles today.  Tom is a repeat sponsor, having sponsored miles 135-136 (completed on Feb. 7th), miles 175-176 (may get there this weekend if I get a long run in) and now miles 289-290 (on pace for completion on Mar. 25th).  Thanks Tom for following my progress and for your now regular contributions.

A few people (and maybe more) are getting together to run the Sandy Hook Run for the Families on Mar. 23rd in Hartford.  A "Race4Chase" team has been set up so there will be a group running specifically in honor of Chase and to support the Kowalski's.  More details to come on that event.

Feb 14 - 3.1 Miles Ran, 25 Miles Sponsored

The sponsors did not take kindly to my comment that I was catching up to them!  Moe deMayo, a friend from the Masuk High Class of `83, told me that an article about this effort was published in the Monroe Courier.  I was interviewed a few weeks back and didn't know when the article would be published.  I haven't seen the article yet, and as I told Moe, I'm a little nervous because the last time I was in the Courier, it was in a high school basketball photo with the caption reading "Awkward But Effective".  I may have to dig that memorable clipping out of my scrap book and post it here (before some else does--I know Greg Ruel is looking for it as we speak!)  Hopefully the reporter was kind, but even if its an "Awkward" redux, I'm happy that the article reached Moe and that he is willing to help the cause.  Thanks Moe.

I also heard from Cheryl Renaud Dowd, who sponsored 15 miles on behalf of her 3 sons. She quoted Robert Frost, stating that I ("have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep"). I responded that I have been thinking more about Jack than Robert Frost on my last few runs. However, she (and Robert) are right, I do have promises to keep. For the deMayo family, I am promising to run miles 263-272, and for Cheryl's sons, I promise to run miles 273-277 (son 1); 278, 279 and 280-282 (son 2) and 283-287 (son 3). Big thanks to both Moe and Cheryl for their generosity and kind messages.

I also want to share Becky Kowalski's response to my post about the 50 miles sponsored by the students, teachers and families at Rocky Heights Middle School in Colorado:

Rebecca wrote: "Wow! God bless America, this is fantastic Thank you
from the bottom of our hearts, I once again am speechless...AMAZING
XOXO"

This is what it's all about--showing our support directly to this incredible family and lifting their spirits--we can make a difference!

I ran 3.2 miles mid-afternoon in Farmington.  The roads are still a mess but the temps were in the 40's again, very comfortable.  I didn't feel as strong as earlier in the week but that's part of running nearly everyday--some runs are really reboots for the coming days.  I covered miles 158 and 159, sponsored by Joanne Zuzick Garrett and mile 160 sponsored by Ashish Modi.  Thank you Joanne and Ashish, I appreciate your support!

Feb. 13 - 5.1 Miles Ran

Sponsors....I'm gaining ground on you!  I had a nice 5.1 mile run in the late afternoon today.  (Fortunately not so late that it was dark towards the end like yesterday).  Low 40's, ran in shorts very comfortably.  Still need to pay extra attention to traffic with the roads so narrow.because of the snow.

Today I covered miles 153-157 today.  Sara Steinert-Borella & Family sponsored 154-156 and another classmate, Joanne Zuzick-Garrett sponsored 157.  Thanks to my Class of `83 friends for sponsoring these miles.

P.S.  For those of you who miss the photos, I took a couple days off from snapping pics so that I could run a little harder.  I tend to lock in at a fairly leisurely pace when I'm surveying the landscape for photo ops.  I'm  also guessing you are all getting tired of looking at more snow anyway. :)

Feb. 12 - 4.4 Miles Ran

Another crazy day at work--one on one meetings all day with new issues popping up throughout the day.  I periodically looked outside and was excited about running in the warmer weather, but my window started to close as I watched the sun get lower in the sky.  With my last meeting over at 5pm, I raced up the locker room to change and got out around 5:10pm.  The first 3/4 of the run was great, a little heavy on traffic at that hour but manageable, even with the shoulders filled with snow.  The last 1/4 was a little hairy as it got pretty dark. However I managed to dodge traffic and continue on the quest for 1,000.

I completed miles 148-152 on the run.  These miles were sponsored by Len Gutman (148-149), Heather Goode (150-151) and Sara Steinert-Borella and Family (152).  Thank you Len, Heather and Sara & Family for supporting my effort.

We're supposed to get more snow tonight so it looks like I will be running in wet shoes for a while.  This weather will just make the warm spring runs that much more enjoyable.  There, I filled up my half of the glass, how 'bout the rest of our group?  Anyone over the age of 12 have something good to say about the weather??? :)

Feb. 11 - 3.2 Miles Ran, No Sponsors

Despite racing the clock on a work assignment, I was able to get in a 3.2 mile run through the snowy and foggy streets of Colchester.  Mother Nature decided to remove all worries about the icy path to Day Pond by covering it with 3 feet of snow.  And the Colchester DPW is doing its part by presumably leaving that stretch of road for last on the plow list.

It was actually a really nice run today, with temps in the 40's.  I am confined to only a few roads given how precariously the main streets are, but by retracing my steps a little I have fashioned a decent 3.2 mile route.  (Though I did a little Apolo Ohno impersonation coming down the last hill--definitely see how apropos his last name is now).

Today's miles, 145-147, were sponsored by Len Gutman.  Thanks for sponsoring these miles Len--I sure didn't see running between 5 foot snow banks when you sponsored those miles back in January!

Feb. 10 - Rest Day

I found out Sunday that I hadn't used the "shovel-muscle" group in some time, so I decided not to risk further damage and passed on running.  This was fairly disappointing as I had been gearing up for a hilly 10.3 mile run in Glastonbury before the storm.  It turned out that work demands required my attention anyway and thus is turned out to be a good day to play catch up on some non-running activities.

Feb. 9 - Nemo Schnemo!

I played beat the clock today as I tried to finish shoveling before nightfall so I could attempt a run and get the best of Nemo.  I "finished" (basically cleared the bare minimum to get one car out) just before 5pm and was able to sneak in a nice, easy 3.2 mile run.  Between icy roads and a long afternoon of shoveling I was happy to run at a snail's pace.  A few folks clearing their driveways gave me that "what's this guy up to?" glance-I'm pretty used to that look after a few years of winter running.

I covered miles 142-144 today.  Celine Caliento-Wicks sponsored miles 142 and 143.  The timing of the miles was great--Celine announced yesterday that students, teachers and families connected with her school (Rocky Heights Middle School in Colorado) are sponsoring 50 miles!  I also want to thank Len Gutman who sponsored mile 144 and next five I'll run.

No sponsors today but after the Rocky Height's announcement I have plenty of running to do to catch up to the sponsors.

What an effort!  I love to see all the students who participated--it's great to know that there are special young people like the RHMS students who really care about others in need and are ready to take action to support them.  I know the Kowalski's will be moved to hear about your support--I can't wait to share this with them!

I was able to squeeze in 3.8 miles this morning before the snow really got going.  I decided to do a "fun run" an not worry at all about pace.  I took my time snapping pictures and also had a quick chat with a senior who was walking his dog at the pond.  He saw me taking pictures of the snowy pond and said "I'll bet you'll like those picture better in July!"

I completed miles 138-141 which were sponsored by Lori Kessler.  Thanks for your support Lori!  It was also pretty cool that the last half mile of today's run was part of mile 142 which was sponsored by Celine back on January 29th.

Feb. 7 - 4.5 Miles Ran, Sponsor's Dozing

I got out of work after meetings `til 4pm, and raced home to get a 4.5 mile run in.  I started the run at about 5:10pm, and it was still fairly light out--very encouraging for the running schedule.  With Winter Storm Nemo blowing in, the next two days could be very interesting.  I may have to get out early tomorrow to have any chance, and Saturday looks like a white out.  Might make for a great photo op though!

I ran the Day Pond loop with two extra laps around the pond to increase the mileage.  Felt very strong, in fact, I've felt great all week (knock on wood).  Today's miles were sponsored by Eric Hopkins (134), Tom Jones (135-136) and Lori Kessler (137).  Thanks Eric, Tom and Lori for supporting the cause.  Time to look for the snow shoes!

Feb. 6 - 3.2 Miles Ran, 6 Miles Sponsored

Another nice day for a run, though I waited a few hours too many.  A little after noon it seemed like the temperature was in the 40's with very little wind.  I got out a little after 3pm and it had cooled off and a steady breeze blew in.  Overall, still not too bad.  I ran the "condo and back" 3.2 mile course in Farmington. I felt pretty strong and was picking up the pace towards the end of the run.

Eric Hopkins sponsored these miles (131-133).  Thanks again Hoppy--I owe you one more of the ten miles you sponsored.

Today Lindsay Knauf sponsored a mile.  Thanks Lindsay, you have mile 202.  Lindsay is the author of the 26in2013forsandyhook blog.  She is running 26 races this year, one for each Sandy Hook victim.  She is running for Victoria Soto on Saturday in Stratford and Daniel Barden on Sunday.  Please drop by Lindsay's blog to wish her well.  I met Lindsay at the McCluskey 5-Miler in Milford on Jan. 27 and she really is an inspiration.

I also received an email from a sponsor of 10 miles who wished to remain anonymous.  Thank you Anonymous for your kind words and donation.  You have miles 203-212.

Feb. 5 - 4.4 Miles Ran, Rest Day for Sponsors

Nice day for a run--a little chilly but absolutely no wind.  I ran the Batterson Lake Loop with the Stanley Park extension.  The run covered miles 126-130, all sponsored by Eric Hopkins.  Thanks Hoppy, I appreciate your support.

The sponsors took a well-earned day off today.  I want to thank everyone who's sponsored miles to date--your generosity is a big boost to Steve and Becky's cause and absolutely motivating for me.  There have been several days on which a sponsor's email or post inspired me to get out an run rather than get consumed by the events of the day.  I announced my effort on January 14, and only 3 weeks later you all have sponsored 224 miles--that' really amazing.  THANK YOU!
