Mar. 1 - Fartlek, That's Right, Fartlek

I did my first speed workout of the year today.  With the half marathon behind me and a couple of 5K's ahead, I thought I do some very minor speed work to shake things up.  I ran 3.2 miles, with about 1.7 of them coming in the form of a fartlek.  Before the Bevis & Butthead snickering gets out of hand, Merriam-Webster defines fartlek as follows:

Definition of FARTLEK

: endurance training in which a runner alternates periods of sprinting with periods of jogging

It may be pushing it to say I was sprinting, but I alternated my pace every two telephone poles.  I'm sure it looks pretty ridiculous to motorists, but no one can take something called a fartlek seriously, so they mind as well get a chuckle out of the old, awkward, sorta-sprinting guy as they pass by.  It was actually fun though I did feel totally uncoordinated running at a fast pace for first time in a long time.  At least I didn't trip!

I covered miles 216-218 sponsored by the Connelly Family for their son Thomas, a student at Rocky Heights Middle School in Colorado.  Thanks, Connelly's for your support.
